Purple Martins Travel 3000 Miles from Brazil to Walt Disney World Each Year
Yesterday was National Bird Day! It was also the beginning of purple martin nesting season. Dr. Mark Penning shared all about the purple martins on Instagram and how they travel from Brazil to Walt Disney World every year.
Every year purple martins travel over 3000 miles from the Brazilian rainforest to Walt Disney World. And every year, Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team prepares, maintains and observes the purple martin bird houses at Disney World. The birds lay eggs and care for their chicks until they learn to fly. Then, they return to Brazil.
Disney conservation tracks the purple martins to understand where they go in Brazil. The research helps them learn about the birds habitats, including the small islands they frequent along the Amazon River. Have you ever seen these beautiful birds at Disney World?
