Help Promote Anti-Bullying-Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars Day

Bullying in the geek community hit an all time low in 2010 when a little girl named Katie who was in first grade was cruelly bullied for liking Star Wars. Her mother wrote about it online and the amazing community of Star Wars fans rallied around Katie to show her to be brave and proud to like Star Wars.

Since then the movement has continued every year and this year is the 4th anniversary. The movement has turned into a day where we as Star Wars fans and people who love Geek culture come together to celebrate that love. We choose to wear Star Wars gear today to show that bullying must be stopped. There is never a reason for anyone children especially to be bullied because they like something that our culture sees as a “nerd” thing or a “boy” thing. Not only do we support anti-bullying with this movement but we also promote giving a Star Wars toy to something like Toys for Tots and putting a note on the toy saying “This toy is for both Boys AND Girls”.

Today December 19th, 2014 is the 5th Annual Wear Star Wars Share Star Wars Day and here is how you can get involved.

Portrait of an Adoption is hosting the 5th Annual Wear Star Wars/ Share Star Wars Day! Also known as Proud To Be Me Day, the event combines the fun of being true to yourself with the chance to donate a toy to a child in need.

On Friday, December 19, 2014, we invite you once again to celebrate this day of geek pride and anti-bullying by:

1). Wearing something Star Wars or science fiction-related.

2). Donating a Star Wars or science fiction toy to a child in need (but please put a post-it note on the new, unwrapped toy specifying that it can go to a girl or a boy; otherwise, these traditional “boy toys” will be given only to boys). You can bring the toy to a hospital, a shelter, or drop it off with any charitable organization collecting toys.

3). Post your pics on this Facebook page or on Twitter with the hashtag #WearStarWars2014

Your school or workplace can use this as a fun way to stand up to the terrible problem of bullying and help needy kids at the same time!

This holiday season event began in 2010 when first-grader Katie Goldman was repeatedly taunted for being a girl who loved Star Wars, and the Internet rallied around her, creating a day to wear Star Wars clothes and costumes in support of everyone’s right to like what they like!

At your school or workplace, you can make the event even more inclusive by calling it Proud To Be Me Day, and people are invited to wear anything that represents a special interest of theirs, regardless of age, gender, religion, etc. Other schools are encouraged to participate in this activity and combine it with anti-bullying programming. Kids can collect toy donations at their schools and learn about the spirit of giving.

Fangirls in the force

I hope all of our Disney family will join in and wear something Star Wars if you have it. If not you can always wear something Disney or Marvel! There is also another way to get involved. I will be gathering images from today and posting them on my various Star Wars social media. If you would like to be featured simply tag me in your twitter or instagram post (@icecoldpenguin on both) and use the hashtag #wearstarwars2014. I will be posting my contribution later today.

May the force be with you and help us put an end to bullying,

Teresa Delgado
