Port Canaveral, known as America’s second-busiest cruise port, has started a $48 million dollar expansion. The port’s North Cargo Berth 3 complex is being renovated. Ground was broken recently to start the work on the port.
That terminal was originally built in 1976 and is functionally obsolete today because it cannot support larger shipping traffic passing through the port channel.

“This groundbreaking is the start of a new chapter for Port Canaveral,” stated Capt. John Murray, Port Director and CEO. “This berth project is critical to expand our abilities to accommodate a growing and very diverse cargo business portfolio. After a couple of difficult years, it’s great to be back and, once again, building our future on a solid foundation of current business and a wide horizon of new opportunities.”

Even though cruising had declined due to the pandemic, the port had a record year for cargo last year and it’s on track for another great year in 2022.
The new design for the north terminal includes constructing an 880-foot-long replacement berth to replace the over-water pier. The project is a critical component of Port Canaveral’s expansion of its cargo facilities.
The construction should be done in a year.
