Pixar Director Leaving Company After 25 Years.

Pixar Director Lee Unkrich has announced his resignation after working for the company for 25 years.  Unkrich has worked at the Emeryville, California-based studio for 25 years.  Pixar Director Lee Unkrich first joined the company when the company was in the midst of making its feature, Toy Story, at the time was serving as an editor before moving up to becoming a Pixar Director.

Unkrich co-directed a few of the Pixar classics, such as Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo.  Unkrich went on to become a solo director on Toy Story 3 and Coco.  Coco  grossed over $807 Million worldwide and won the best animated feature Academy Award

Unkrich turned in his resignation on Friday with an amicable departure on a high note and his colleagues sung his praises.  “Lee arrived at Pixar as we were crafting Toy Story, and he’s had a profound effect on all Pixar films since.  He literally taught us rookie filmmakers about staging, composition and cutting.  His artistry and expert craftmanship as an editor and co-director became a major reason for the high quality of our filmmaking, as Lee went on to direct, his ability to find the deep humor and emotion enabled him to create some of the strongest films we’ve made,” said Pete Docter, Pixar Director of Monster’s Inc. and Pixar’s chief creative officer.

Unkrich made the following statement to Pixar employees about his departure, “I’m not leaving to make films at another studio; instead, I look forward to spending much needed time with my family and pursuing interests that have long been back-burner.”

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn leaves us with the final statement, “Lee has left an indelible mark on the world of film, and we are so grateful for the passion and talent he has brought to each movie he has worked on.  He’ll always be part of the Disney-Pixar family, and we will miss him.”  We wish you well, former Pixar Director Lee Unkrich, on your new chapter in life.
