Big shifts are happening in the Disneyland Resort expansion timeline. Following the massive announcements at the recent D23 Horizons Disney Experiences Showcase, it has been confirmed that the highly anticipated Avatar destination coming to Disney California Adventure is being pushed back.
Instead, Walt Disney Imagineering is prioritizing a full, ground-up reimagining of Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park.
While Pandora – World of Avatar was initially confirmed for the West Coast during a 2023 earnings call, and concept art for a brand-new boat ride was showcased at D23, progress on the Avatar expansion will take a back seat to several other massive ongoing projects.

The Updated Disneyland Resort Expansion Timeline
With multiple major construction projects happening simultaneously, Disney has established a clear order of operations for the foreseeable future. The current priority list for the Disneyland Resort is as follows:
- Parking Structure and Pedestrian Bridge (Currently underway)
- Avengers Campus Expansion (Including Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab)
- New Coco Ride (Road and utility work currently in progress)
- Tomorrowland Transformation
- Avatar Land

Why Tomorrowland is Taking Priority
The decision to focus on Tomorrowland ahead of the Avatar expansion comes down to giving Disneyland Park a much-needed structural and thematic update. Disney has shared that the Tomorrowland overhaul will be inspired by Walt Disney’s original optimistic vision for the future, bringing new attractions and expansive open spaces to the land.
Because the Tomorrowland reimagining is still in its very early developmental stages—with no formalized plans announced just yet—this project will naturally push the timeline for the Avatar land out significantly.

What Does This Mean for the Avatar Expansion?
Fans of the Avatar franchise will have to wait a little longer to experience the new land, but the project is still very much on the horizon. The new Avatar destination will feature a headlining boat ride with thrilling, mysterious, and relaxing segments, utilizing completely different attractions from the Pandora area in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida.
However, to clear space for the Avatar land, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! was originally scheduled to close in early 2026. Because of the timeline shift, Disney has confirmed that the Monsters, Inc. attraction will remain open into 2027 to ensure younger families still have plenty of ride offerings available in the park.
