YouTube Named the New Home of the Oscars Starting in 2029
After airing on ABC since 1976, the Academy Awards (Oscars)—the world’s most-watched awards ceremony—will officially move to a streaming-only platform starting in 2029. This landmark deal represents a new era for the Academy, encompassing not only the main ceremony but also the red carpet coverage, the official nominations announcement, the Governors Awards, and more.

Disney will maintain broadcasting rights for the Oscars through 2028, concluding a long-standing era with the 100th Academy Awards. Starting in 2029, the ceremony will transition to YouTube, where it will be streamed for free to a global audience of billions and offered to YouTube TV subscribers in the U.S. This new partnership with YouTube (owned by Alphabet Inc.) includes not just the awards themselves, but a suite of additional programming that serves as the Academy’s primary revenue driver.

This deal brings the entire “Oscar Season” to YouTube. From the high-stakes nominations announcement to the honorary Oscars presented at the Governors Awards, fans will have front-row access to every major milestone. The coverage also includes the Nominees Luncheon, behind-the-scenes content, and the Scientific and Technical Awards.
The digital transformation continues with the Academy Museum, which will partner with Google Arts & Culture to open its doors to the world. By digitizing select exhibitions and portions of their 52-million-item collection, the Academy is ensuring that film history is more accessible than ever before.
The outgoing home of the Oscars issued a statement of its own: “ABC has been the proud home to The Oscars for more than half a century. We look forward to the next three telecasts, including the show’s centennial celebration in 2028, and wish the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continued success.”
