OpenAI Reportedly Closes Sora & Terminates Disney Licensing Deal
In a stunning reversal, OpenAI is reportedly shuttering its Sora AI video platform just months after its initial debut. According to sources familiar with the situation via The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is also terminating the landmark agreement it signed with OpenAI last year. That deal, which included a pledged $1 billion investment and the licensing of iconic Disney characters for Sora’s generative video technology, has officially been dissolved.

“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you,” the company said in a statement. “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
While OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman aren’t abandoning AI video altogether—as the technology remains a core component of the broader ChatGPT ecosystem—the standalone Sora app appears to be a casualty of the company’s shifting priorities.

When Sora first debuted last fall, it sent shockwaves through Hollywood by demonstrating the “free” use of established intellectual property and famous likenesses. However, that bold entrance was short-lived; within days, OpenAI was forced to backtrack, implementing stricter controls to give studios and talent power over how their IP was utilized on the platform.
The app’s closure now leaves Disney in a complicated position. After inking a blockbuster deal last December to invest in OpenAI, Disney had planned to integrate its legendary characters into Sora with the ultimate goal of bringing generative AI features directly to Disney+. With the standalone platform shuttering, the future of that high-tech integration remains uncertain.

With the OpenAI partnership officially dissolved, Disney may now be looking toward other AI giants to fill the void. A Disney spokesperson commented on the shift, stating:
“As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere. We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
Regardless of how generative AI ultimately reshapes film and TV production, it appears Sora will be remembered as a mere footnote rather than the industry-altering software many expected. This move also leaves Google in a unique position of power as the only remaining player with a scaled AI video platform, though it has yet to secure major IP deals and continues to navigate ongoing legal challenges from creators.
