Oldies But Goodies – Should Seniors Use Detailed Touring Plans?

Oldies But Goodies - Should Seniors Use Detailed Touring Plans?

This is yet another one of those questions where the answer depends on the individuals involved. The approach a Senior takes toward park touring depends on a number of things – Disney experience level, health, overall energy level, length of stay and expectations are all things that influence that approach. You will notice that time of year and weather were not included, since a very large portion of us are retired those items are under our control because of our travel time flexibility.

Many people, Oldies included, thrive on the discipline a detailed touring plan offers. People who enjoy a high level of order and pre planning like to feel in control of everything that is possible to control. During my working years, I was addicted to order and personal discipline, as I have aged, not so much. Taking some time to watch people, enjoy the horticulture, and just generally bask in the ambiance of Walt Disney World has taken on a lot more importance when compared to riding as many rides as possible in the shortest amount of time.

I would never recommend that you try to do any park touring without at least some thought or planning – “winging it” can be extremely frustrating because you often find yourself at the wrong attraction at the wrong time. Having some familiarity with each park’s layout and general visitor flow is a valuable tool. There are many resources in book form and on line where this type of information can be found. I have found that there are two particularly fine books for information about Walt Disney World. My first choice is and always has been Passporter particularly for folks with less Disney experience and my choice (combined with Passporter) for the very experienced Senior is The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. Each of these books will give you the type of information I have mentioned plus much more. The best forums for getting your questions answered are absolutely the Passporter Forums. The folks there are the friendliest and some of the best Disney informed people on the planet. You will never be insulted or ridiculed there and no matter what question you may have, someone knows the answer and will take the time to respond to your question.

I personally do not use detailed touring plans but some of my friends here at Chip and Company do. My fellow Oldies, whether or not you use them is totally up to you and if you are relatively inexperienced with Walt Disney World it might benefit you to at least have some idea of what you want to accomplish during your park visits. Equally as important though is picking the right time of year to be there and having a good basic knowledge of park layout and visitor flow. Take the time to do a bit of research before your visit. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World.
