Universal Patent Teases Walking Animatronics That Could Bring Characters to Life Like Never Before

Universal might be cooking up something that feels straight out of a sci-fi queue line. A newly published patent suggests that Universal Parks & Resorts is developing technology that allows animatronic figures to appear to walk, potentially leveling up how characters move and interact inside the parks.

The patent, titled “Animated Figure Walking Mechanism,” outlines a system where a figure is attached to a hidden carrier platform. Through a coordinated series of motors, hinges, and sliding components, the animatronic’s legs move in a way that creates the illusion of walking while the base itself handles the actual movement. Think less “free-roaming robot” and more “master of illusion,” where every step is carefully choreographed behind the scenes.

This differs from Disney’s experimental free-walking characters like the Olaf seen overseas, which are fully ambulatory robots. Universal’s approach sticks closer to traditional animatronics, but with a clever twist that could allow for more dynamic movement without the complexity or safety challenges of fully independent robots roaming crowded park pathways.

There is no official word yet on where this tech might show up, but the possibilities are as wide open as a park on opening morning. Imagine creatures stalking through dark rides, characters pacing dramatically on stage, or even interactive figures that seem to stroll right alongside guests. With Universal Orlando Resort and Epic Universe continuing to push boundaries, this patent could be a glimpse into the next generation of theme park storytelling.
