Ms. Marvel tackles Kamala’s origin story quite differently than the comic source material. Those who read the comics will notice what’s different, but they are mostly minor changes to help transition her into the MCU.
Much like her comic book counterpart, the Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) of Disney+’s Ms. Marvel is an awkward teen whose head is stuck in the clouds and filled with dreams of one day becoming a superpowered hero like her idol, Carol Danvers. Much of the larger world around Kamala is still wrapping its mind around the reality of the Avengers’ win against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, but Ms. Marvel zooms in on Kamala’s life in Jersey City, New Jersey, to spotlight how, in fits and starts, people are beginning to move on.
In general, viewers may find Ms. Marvel’s show to be similar to how Peter Parker’s life went as a high school student in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
It’s a grounded story featuring a teenage superhero as she tries to dIscover herself and her new path in life. An interesting viewpoint of the show is how current high schoolers in the MCU grew up watching superheroes in real life since 2008. Since it’s a ”normal” phenomenon in their childhood, a lot of the teens have fan obsessions of who their favorite hero is in their world. For Kamala Khan, her obsession is the hero Captain Marvel.
Without giving any spoilers, we thought the first two episodes did a great job with the character building. Viewers can get acquainted with Kamala’s friends and family while her story arc as a hero begins. It’s not an ”epic” like Avengers, but instead focuses on a life that’s relatable to young people.
Marvel’s Disney+ shows, from WandaVision to Loki to Moon Knight, have done their best to gently twist Marvel’s typical house style in terms of their overall aesthetics. Ms. Marvel, however, manages to explode it by cleverly incorporating animation throughout.
The first episode of Ms. Marvel premieres June 8th exclusively on Disney+. We hope subscribers enjoy the new Marvel hero!
