New Star Wars Trilogy Films To Be Released Every Other Year Starting In 2022

New Star Wars Trilogy Films To Be Released Every Other Year Starting In 2022. After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres this December we won’t see another Star Wars film in theaters for 3 years.

Disney had previously announce a film hiatus for Star Wars films after the poor performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story. The fans complained of over saturation of Star Wars films when Solo premiered merely weeks after Star Wars: The Last Jedi and were displeased in several elements of the film including: casting choices, the very public director change mid-filming, and what some believed to be a botched storytelling of one of the fans favorite classic characters.

Disney and Lucasfilm saw it best to press the ‘pause button’ on their previously announced working films such as a film based off Obi Wan Kenobi, another featuring Master Yoda, and a unique choice in a featured film about Boba Fett, which was later reimagined into a series called The Mandalorian that will be exclusively available on Disney+, Disney’s new streaming service coming in November 2019. The Mandalorian is being produced by Iron Man director, Jon Favreau. We are also going to see a series on Disney+ following Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) from Rogue One, the series will take place prior to his story in the film for obvious reasons.

Rian Johnson, Director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is developing a new trilogy for Disney/Lucasfilm, and newcomers to the franchise, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D..B.. Weiss are reportedly working on one as well. It has not been made public if the three gentlemen are working together on the same trilogy set to release in 2022, 2024, and 2026, or two separate trilogies for Lucasfilm.

In a recent interview with EW, Kathleen Kennedy said this about the newcomers: “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars,” said Kennedy, “They’re working very closely with Rian.”

During the interview they discussed the closer of the “Skywalker Saga” and Kennedy stated they were looking at further exploration of the galaxy far, far away or possibly during a completely different time period, potentially a trilogy even set in the Old Republic.

“Yes, absolutely. I think that that’s absolutely on the horizon,” she said. “We’re looking at whether we can move massively in one direction of the other. It’s still Star Wars, and holding on to the DNA of what George created is still very important to us.”

“I think this is a huge opportunity to step into the galaxy in a little bit different part of the timeline,” Kennedy added.

The decision to release these films later than anticipated is a great way for Fans to process and still enjoy more Star Wars content without being flooded with a new story after just seeing the last one and growing weary of the franchise. The New Star Wars Trilogy is set to release alternately every year in December with the new Avatar films as well, after Disney acquired Fox in a recent trade deal/merger. So Dec 2021- Avatar, Dec 2022-Star Wars, Dec 2023-Avatar, and so on and so forth.

Are you excited to hear that there will be a New Star Wars Trilogy? Do you think the break from Star Wars is a good idea? What stories would you like to see come to the silver screen? Let us know in the comments! We would love to hear your theories about what is to come from Disney and Lucasfilm!

  1. They’re smart for taking a break. I feel like they wanted to please the fans so much that they just rushed putting together ‘Solo’ & didn’t put as much thought into it as their previous movies. There’s a lot happening right now with Star Wars like the opening of Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland & Star Wars Land in Hollywood Studios, along with promoting their new merch–fans are so busy anticipating what’s to come in the parks that it’s fine if we take a break from the movies for awhile. #DisneyVacayGiveaway

  2. I’m okay with the long wait, so long as if it’s not ANYTHING like Phantom Menace! #DisneyVacayGiveaway
