New Star Wars Films Rumored to be ‘In the Works’ Despite Claims of Hiatus by Lucasfilm. As much as Lucasfilm is insisting the studio is taking a break from Star Wars movies, every other day we keep getting reports on directors, writers, and producers being assign to new Star Wars project. The most recent rumor has been swirling around that Sleight writer/director J.D. Dillard and Luke Cage writer Matt Owens are attached to a new Star Wars story.

Should the rumors prove true, Dillard would become the first black director for a Star Wars film in the franchises history, proving Kathleen Kennedy truly is making efforts to make Lucasfilm a more diverse studio with truly talented staff at the helm.

Lucasfilm and Disney have also shared set release dates, specially for Star Wars films set to release in December 2022, 2024, and 2026, with no indication of those dates being pushed back any time soon. Personally, I do not think 3-years counts as a “hiatus” for films, but I digress.

It is currently unknown what the plot of the film will be, what characters will be included, or if a completely new Star Wars story is set to be told within the same universe. It is also unknown if Dillard’s specific project will receive a theatrical release or may be streamed exclusively on Disney+.

The studio does seem to be heavily focused on Disney+ content for the time being. With production already beginning soon on a second season of the massively popular The Mandalorian, a currently untitled Cassian Andor based Rogue One prequel series, and the high-anticipated untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series with returning star Ewan McGregor, coming soon to Disney+, it’s no wonder Lucasfilm may be taking a brief sabbatical from feature film making to focus on the tasks at hand.

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Star Wars franchise now that the Force has awakened. (Get it?)
