New Movie Poster Gives Us a First Look at Mushu in Live-Action 'Mulan'

New Movie Poster Gives Us a First Look at Mushu in Live-Action ‘Mulan‘. Though marketing has been scarce for Mulan, high anticipation releases of several big name blockbusters such as Frozen II and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are to blame for stealing the spotlight as of late, but soon we will get a closer look at the next live-action remake from Disney set to premiere in Spring 2020.

Internationally, efforts are being made to market Mulan in a better light after harsh backlash against the film and its leading lady for comments she made about the riots in Hong Kong in support of the Chinese Government. The surprising comment from Liu Yifei sparked outrage from moviegoers who have been spreading the hashtag #BoycottMulan to help raise awareness to the current political climate in China and boycott the film when it is released.

Part of those efforts to increase positive responses to the films debut was the release of an official movie poster for the film that features the newly imagined Mushu, who no longer takes on the form of a dragon, but now is featured as a phoenix in the film. It is currently unclear if ‘Mushu’ will be a speaking role in the film or will merely act as a symbol and guide for Mulan along her journey.

Original voice of Mulan from the 1999 Disney classic and Disney Legend, Ming-Na Wen, had shared her love for a new kind of Disney Princess that the animated feature first introduced, during a convention appearance and how she thoroughly enjoyed getting to portray a strong female character who thought outside the box to care for the people she loved.

“I really believe that Mulan was one of the first Disney princesses – I mean, she really wasn’t a Disney princess if you think about it. She was just a girl in a village and she became a woman warrior. Which is also the trend, I think, of Disney princesses at the time. They were more or less damsels in distress. And it was really wonderful to have a character that was able to not need a man to save her – in fact, she saved the guy – and came into her own discovery of what her self worth is and what she was capable of doing,” said Wen.

Though the poster shares April 17th as the films release date internationally, Mulan is set to premiere on March 27, 2020 in the United States. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co for all things Disney!
