Disney Patents AI-Powered Ride Restraint Safety System

Disney may be looking to give ride safety checks a little extra pixie-dusted backup. A newly published Disney patent outlines an AI-powered restraint verification system that could use cameras, sensors, and machine learning to help confirm that guests are properly secured before a ride vehicle is dispatched.

The system, described as a “restraint verification platform,” would gather information from multiple sources, including live video, seat sensors, clasp sensors, proximity sensors, microphones, RFID, LIDAR, rotary encoders, and other hardware. Machine-learning models could then analyze things like passenger position, visible belt length, buckles, lap bars, shoulder straps, vests, and other ride restraint components.

One example in the patent explains how the system could compare what a camera sees with what a sensor measures. If a seat belt appears short on video but a sensor shows it has been pulled out much farther, the system could flag that something may be wrong. That could mean a guest is sitting on part of the belt, the restraint is not positioned correctly, or the rider moved after the initial check.

If the system detects an issue, it could notify a ride operator, stop dispatch, or otherwise alert Cast Members before the vehicle moves. The goal appears to be twofold: adding another layer of safety oversight while potentially reducing the amount of time needed for manual restraint checks.

The patent is not tied to one specific attraction and references multiple types of restraints, which means the concept could theoretically apply to coasters, dark rides, tower rides, and other ride systems.

Of course, Disney files patents all the time, and not every idea makes it into the parks. This does not mean AI restraint checks are coming tomorrow, or even at all. Still, the filing gives a fascinating peek at how Disney could use machine learning to support ride operators, improve safety checks, and possibly speed up loading in the future.
