Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro Explains Why Lightning Lane Works Differently at Walt Disney World and Disneyland

If you’ve ever tried to book a Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World and then hopped over to Disneyland only to feel like you entered a completely different system, you’re not imagining things, and now we finally have an official answer why. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro addressed the long-debated differences during the 2026 Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, and his explanation comes down to one key idea: the parks may share magic, but they operate in totally different worlds.

According to D’Amaro, the Lightning Lane systems are intentionally designed to match how guests experience each resort. Walt Disney World is a sprawling vacation destination with four theme parks, dozens of hotels, and guests who often plan their trips months in advance. Because of that, the ability to book Lightning Lanes as early as 7 a.m., even before stepping into the park, helps guests map out their day like a carefully choreographed parade. It’s all about structure, strategy, and making the most of a large-scale vacation.

Over at Disneyland, things move at a much quicker, more spontaneous pace. With two parks sitting side by side and a more compact layout, guests tend to flow between attractions and parks throughout the day. That “on-the-ground” energy is why Disneyland uses a location-based Lightning Lane system instead. In other words, less pre-planning, more go-with-the-flow magic.

D’Amaro emphasized that while the systems may look different, the goal is the same: give guests a flexible, optional way to spend less time in line and more time enjoying attractions. And as always, Disney says they are continuing to evaluate guest feedback and usage to fine-tune the experience.

So whether you’re a rope-drop strategist in Florida or a park-hopping free spirit in California, Lightning Lane is designed to fit your style. The real question now is… which version do you prefer?
