Netflix Cuts "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage

Just when the comic book fans of America were about to settle into a new season of Daredevil, some related news broke.  Surprising, unpleasant news.  Netflix confirmed that Luke Cage will not return for a third season.

A week ago a statement was released regarding Iron Fist, saying it would not return for a third season on Netflix.  But this Luke Cage news feels different.  Though both were released on Friday evenings, the Iron Fist release seems well planned.  It says explicitly that it won’t return on Netflix, giving some hope that it would be coming over to the new Disney streaming service.  They praised the cast and crew and thanked the fans.  Though a show ending is disappointing, this seemed like a gentle, though not altogether surprising announcement.

Friday night, however, it seems the Luke Cage news just hit the fan.  Deadline exclusively reported that, despite the work already put in and both lead actor Mike Colter and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker still being under contract, the show would not continue.  The season appears to have just disintegrated.  In a joint statement, Marvel and Netflix said, “Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season.  Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast, and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Coker tweeted his farewells early Saturday morning.  He said, “A lot (of) memories.  A lot of individual thank you calls to make.  Just want to say thank you to Marvel, Netflix, the best Writer’s room, cast, crew, the Midnight Hour, all those who graced the stage at Harlem’s Paradise, and the most incredible fan base in the world. Forward always…”

So where does that leave us with the Marvel series?  The Defenders never had a season two order, and we’re left to assume there won’t be one.  The Punisher has already finished filming and is in post-production, so we should get another wild ride with Frank Castle.  Jessica Jones is currently filming; my favorite anti-hero appears to be safe for now.  That leaves Daredevil as the wild card.  Season three was just released on Friday, so if there is a season four, we’re a long way from it.

With roughly half of The Defenders series still standing, only time will tell how long we have to enjoy them.
