Muppets Mayhem Cancelled After 1 Season

Variety reported that “The Muppets Mayhem” has been discontinued after completing its first season on Disney+. The show, made its debut on Disney+ in May 2023, featuring a cast that included Lily Singh, Tahj Mowry, Saara Chaudry, and Anders Holm. Fans quickly praised Mayhem as being the closes thing to the original Muppets Show in years.

The Disney, “Mayhem” featured, “The Electric Mayhem Band — Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet — on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. In October 2021, Disney+ launched the Halloween special “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” and the short-form series “Muppets Now” premiered in July 2020. Initially, Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis, and Josh Gad were slated to develop a new Muppets series, picking up the story immediately following the events of the film “The Muppets Take Manhattan.” However, this project was abandoned before receiving a series order.

Kermit and Ms. Piggie featured prominently in a brand new stage show at the “Jollywood Nights” after-hours event at Hollywood Studio. In Theater of the Stars, Piggie and Kermit help MC “Disney Holidays in Hollywood” live on stage. Fan reaction to the addition of Muppets should clue in Disney about the mood of this fan base, who want more Muppet representation at parks and on television. So to those fans, news that Mayhem was not getting a renewal order for a second season was devastating.

While Disney never committed to a second season, many remained hopeful following the positive reaction to Mayhem from amongst the subscriber base. Did Disney short-change the Muppets? Share your thoughts here in a comment and check back for more Muppet-related news here at Chip and Company.
