In a special edition of Time Magazine dedicated to The Muppets, Muppets Studio Vice President Leigh Slaughter spoke with writer Chris Nashawaty about the characters’ enduring appeal. Slaughter summarized the studio’s philosophy, stating that fans primarily “want some laughs and a little bit of joy” from the Muppets, concluding: “We’re here to make the world a whole lot happier and a little weirder.”
Nashawaty added, “To that end, fans may want to start booking their travel plans for next year, because they’re about to see a lot more of Kermit and company at Disney’s cruise ships and theme parks, including live appearances from the characters on land and sea.”

Following the permanent closure of MuppetVision 3D this past summer, the Muppets are dramatically increasing their physical presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Writer Chris Nashawaty confirmed in his interview that the Muppets will take over the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster next year. This re-theming will feature “live” elements, including penguin and Scooter animatronics in the pre-show. Additionally, Kermit and Miss Piggy have already made live appearances at the park during the Disney Holidays in Hollywood stage show, exclusive to Disney Jollywood Nights. Historically, several Muppets also appeared live at Magic Kingdom in the popular show The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History, which ran from 2016 to 2020.
This new announcement marks the first indication that live Muppets could be returning to Disney Cruise Line ships for regular appearances. While the Muppets currently appear virtually in the Midship Detective Agency game on the Disney Fantasy, their last major live presence was the Muppets Ahoy! stage show on the Disney Wonder in 2006. More recently, the special Two Guys and a Few Muppets show was performed twice on the Disney Treasure‘s maiden voyage, which the Muppets also recapped in a popular social media video following the ship’s launch.
While news of the new appearances is circulating, Disney has not yet provided any official confirmation regarding the introduction of live Muppets on Disney Cruise Line.
