The Muppets editor sued Disney for harassment. An assistant film editor of “The Muppets” has filed a wrongful termination suit against the Walt Disney Company, citing discrimination and harassment against the editor James Thomas.
The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last week. The suit claims that Cecilia Hyoun “was subjected to differential treatment because of her gender, family responsibilities, her race, and age.” The court documents describe Hyoun as “an Asian woman over age 40.” Hyoun claims that Thomas wanted her to choose between her family and work responsibilities.
Hyoun is asking for unspecified damages to be determined by the court. Hyoun filed a formal complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, who granted her a right-to-sue letter.
According to reports, Hyoun began working on the “Muppets” in 2010 and was expected to stay on the film until it was completed in late 2011. However, Hyoun states that she was fired in June 2011 after Disney, through Thomas, asked her to choose between work and family responsibilities. Hyoun also claims that Thomas asked her personal questions that made her feel uncomfortable. She also claims Thomas did not ask these same questions of male employees. In addition, Hyoun claims that Thomas referred to another female employee in derogatory terms.
Disney has not released any official statements on the matter yet.
