I have such fond memories of the Muppet Babies from when I was little. The animated classic aired from 1984 to 1991, and featured adorable versions of beloved characters like Kermit the Frog, Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Gonzo.
Now that I have a child of my own, I really enjoy the nostalgia of watching new versions of my childhood favorites with him. So I was very happy to hear that Disney has begun production on a reimagined Muppet Babies series set to debut in early 2018. The show will co-produced by my household’s favorite channel, Disney Junior, along with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media’s (DCPI) Content & Media group, and The Muppets Studio. This time around we will see the baby versions of our favorite muppets in CG animation!
Like the original classic, the show will feature the playroom adventures of Kermit, Piggy, Animal and more!
Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager, Disney Junior Worldwide, said:
“We are proud, and a little bit giddy, to begin production on our new version of the much-loved Muppet Babies. Parents will delight in seeing their favorite Muppets in the mixed animation style they remember from the original series, and kids will be introduced to this warm and zany world made just right for the Disney Junior audience.”
The episodes of the show will run with a similar format to most Disney Junior shows, featuring 2 11-minute long stories. We will get to see our favorite little Muppets fly through outer space, and other exciting adventures. The series will be geared towards kids aged 4-7, and will highlight creative and critical thinking. It seems like it will be a great show for pre-schoolers, much like Phineas and Ferb was for older children.
Debbie McClellan, Vice President, The Muppets Studio said:
“Bringing Muppet Babies to Disney Junior is a wonderful opportunity to reach a new generation of viewers and to creatively build on the innovative original series. We hope to engage and delight the nostalgic fans while also entertaining new kids, parents and diverse audiences through heart and humor as only the Muppets can deliver.”
We can’t wait to see what the Muppet Babies get up to when the show debuts in 2018.
