Meeting the cast of Disney movies at the press events is always an enjoyable day. The Finest Hours press day included the opportunity to meet and participate in roundtable sessions with Chris Pine (Bernie Webber), Ben Foster (Richard Livesey), Casey Affleck (Ray Sybert), Holiday Grainger (Miriam) and Director Craig Gillespie.
The first to enter our room was Chris Pine and Ben Foster. After welcoming introductions, the pair started right in taking about the difficulties of portraying characters based on a true story. Chris shared that the role of Bernie was unlike anyone he had every played before. In response to what made the role appealing, Pine responded it was about the kindness of the character. Bernie Webber is “not the sharpest or swiftest guy” but although he is scared he knows his boat and he loves his fiance. With Bernie Webber “what you see is what you get.”
In discussing the evolution of the relationship between Bernie and Richard Livesey, Ben Foster responded with one of my favorite moments of the interviews – talking about the honor it was to be able to spend time with the men and women of the military who chose to serve. Foster added how Webber and his crew decided, “I’m gonna go on the boat even though everybody else is saying no.” In terms of Bernie Webber’s journey it was privilege for Ben Foster to spend time with the real Chatham Coast Guard crew but also to see and work alongside Chris Pine in the role of the underdog.
Asked if they understood the idea of people putting themselves after others and if they could be able to fill the characters’ shoes in real life, Foster replied that one would hope that we are all capable of doing the right thing. Chris Pine talked about the fact that we all have that good gene inside to do the right thing. He continued saying he hoped he would have the fortitude and courage like the characters did if he was placed in a situation that required it.
The Finest Hours brings the true story of one of the Coast Guards most heroic rescues in their history. Following the huge storm that struck the New England and surrounding areas, the storm causes two 500 foot tankers to split. On the SS Pendleton, 1st Officer and Chief Engineer Raymond Seybert (Casey Affleck) takes charge and does whatever it takes to keep the part of the ship they are on, floating until rescuers show up. Coast Guard team consisting of Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and his crew are sent out on an impossible mission in a wooden lifeboat. Fighting hurricane winds, 60 ft waves and freezing temperatures, Webber and his men manage to find and rescue the stranded crew. But will they make it back safely?
