Directors of Avengers: Endgame Confirm MCU Multiverses Exist and Loki is in an Altered Timeline. Looks like Thanos was wrong, and that Loki is not gone for good this time, because he is actually in another time and a different Loki. This may get confusing, so follow along as I explain what this means for the future of Marvel and the new future of the god of mischief.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America is tasked with returning the Infinity Stones back to the point they were taken from in order to stop Thanos for good and save the Universe. Due to some unforeseen circumstances by Future Tony Stark and an unknowing Past Hulk, one stone in particular had to be traced back in time again in order to be attained due to Loki, who had recently been captured in the Battle of New York, getting his hands on The Tesseract (Space Stone) and disappearing during some chaos caused by Future Tony Stark and Future Ant Man.
Some fans were confused since this would have altered the events that occurred after the Battle of New York. The films Directors, Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, spoke on the matter recently and wanted to clarify the “plot hole”, which isn’t really a plot hole, as much as a set up for the future of Marvel. Here is what The Russo Brothers had to say.
“The intent was that he [Captain America] was going to correct the past timelines at the point that the stones left,” Joe Russo explained. “Loki, when he teleports away with the Time Stone, would create his own timeline. It gets very complicated, but it would be impossible for [Cap] to rectify the timeline unless he found Loki. The minute that Loki does something as dramatic as take the Space Stone, he creates a branched reality.”
Added Anthony Russo, “We’re dealing with this idea of multiverses and branched realities, so there are many realities.”
So what do they mean by Loki would create his own branched reality? This is where it gets complicated.
Before the Avengers interrupted the “original” timeline by gathering the Infinity Stones, time and events occurred in a single line. After they intervened in the past their actions didn’t change their particular timeline, but they did create alternate timelines which branched off like branches on a tree from the original line, or in this analogy, the trunk of the tree, aka the baseline. So Loki in the original timeline is still dead after Thanos killed him in Avengers: Infinity War, BUT Loki from the interrupted timeline grabbed the Space Stone and is now on a completely different path and is still alive. So this Loki will have no knowledge of the events that occurred after the original Avengers film. This will definitely affect his character and representation since at this point that means his relationship with Thor and Oden is still strained, his mother would still be alive, and his goal would still be to rule Earth.
This will play a big part in the storyline of Loki for the new “Loki” Series coming to Disney+ since he has now had zero of the character development we have seen him go and grow through.
Marvel Studios Head, Kevin Feige, confirmed that there are many new stories to tell and that the studio plans on using the Marvel Multiverse as one new way to tell the many stories yet to be told about our favorite heroes and villains.
“[Disney+] is another exciting avenue and another exciting thing about being at this place at this time and goes back to the amount of characters we have and the amount of stories we could tell,” said Feige. “When we announced ten movies and people asked “Well what about these other things?’ the previous stance would be ‘We only have a certain number of slots to make movies per year.’ That’s still true, but we have another outlet that I think will be very unique and very special.”
The Multiverse was also confirmed in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer when newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Beck, aka Mysterio, claims he is a hero on his home planet from another timeline and is here to help Peter Parker’s timeline. This means we will explore the Marvel Multiverse both in featured films and in Disney+ content. Yay!

It’s perfect because now they can make any movie they want without any plot holes. #DisneyVacayGiveaway
Just like Gamora. Gamora will be in GOTG3 but will have no recollection of Quill and her Guardian mates. So not only will they have to find her. But she will have to learn all over again. Just like Loki wont have any of the experiences from Ragnorak or anything past Avengers 1.
THIS IS EXCITING AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MY HANDS!!! I need a Loki story (even if he is a whiny little–) #DisneyVacayGiveaway
