Massive Villains Land and Piston Peak Construction Expansion Revealed in New Aerial Photos

Magic Kingdom’s biggest expansion ever is no longer just dirt permits and concept art. New aerial photos from bioreconstruct reveal an absolutely staggering level of construction progress behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as Disney transforms the former Rivers of America into the future home of Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land.

And honestly? The scale is kind of hard to process until you see it from above.

The latest aerials showcase what has essentially become a giant canyon of construction stretching across a massive section of northwest Magic Kingdom. Huge swaths of land have now been completely cleared, graded, leveled, and reshaped as Disney begins turning years of blue-sky D23 announcements into something physically visible.

The centerpiece of the activity remains the future Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park expansion, replacing Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. The former waterfront area is now almost entirely unrecognizable, with construction crews actively reshaping the terrain around Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Haunted Mansion.

One of the most noticeable changes in the new photos is the rapidly expanding network of large concrete retaining walls wrapping around the project site. The stepped walls now carve through the former riverbank area and appear to outline future pathways, waterways, and elevation changes that will help separate Frontierland, Liberty Square, and Piston Peak thematically.

The scale of the excavation is enormous. Mountains of dirt, construction staging zones, drainage infrastructure, concrete forms, and heavy equipment now dominate nearly every inch of the former Rivers of America footprint.

Meanwhile, the former Mike Fink Keel Boat Landing area beside Haunted Mansion has now been completely erased, leaving behind a widened construction corridor connecting the expanding work zones. Ongoing refurbishment work on Haunted Mansion is also visible from above, with roofing and scaffolding work continuing behind scrims.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad somehow now looks tiny compared to the sprawling sea of construction surrounding it. The aerials especially highlight how dramatically the guest flow around the mountain will eventually change once new pathways and waterways are completed.

But Piston Peak is only half the story.

Beyond Big Thunder Mountain, the photos also provide a sense of just how much raw land Disney now has available for the future Villains Land expansion. While visible vertical construction for Villains Land has not yet started in earnest, the cleared and prepared land behind the mountain paints a clearer picture than ever before of how massive this expansion pad truly is.

Disney has said Villains Land will feature two major attractions, dining, shopping, and heavily stylized architecture inspired by classic Disney villains. Imagineers previously described the design aesthetic as “conjured architecture” with gothic and Art Nouveau influences, creating an entirely new visual identity for Magic Kingdom.

Together, the combined Piston Peak and Villains Land projects are expected to become the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history.
