This years Academy Awards ceremony was a big night for Disney and Marvel Entertainment. It was an especially big (and historic) evening for Marvel’s Black Panther who made Oscar history while taking home three of the coveted awards. The film is now not only the highest-grossing Marvel film to date, but it’s also the first to win Academy Awards.
The first notable achievement is the Oscar for Best Costume Design that went to Ruth E. Carter. Carter’s accomplishment marks the first time an African American woman has received the honor. “Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king” Carter said during her acceptance speech.
The other milestone during the night was Black Panther’s Hannah Bleacher, taking home the Oscar for Best Production Design. Not only is Bleacher the first woman of color to win, but she’s also the first African American woman ever nominated for the category. Both recipients thanked acclaimed Black Panther director Ryan Coogler for his guidance. Bleacher remarked, “I stand here with agency and self-worth because of Ryan Coogler. You not only made me a better designer, a different storyteller, a better person; I stand here because of this man who offered me a better perspective of life.”
In addition to the historical wins, composer Ludwig Göransson received the Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on the film. Marvel’s Black Panther is currently available on DVD, Blu-Ray and streaming on Netflix.
