Marvel’s work on the sequel to ‘The Avengers’ is now in full swing. Last week we reported that Joss Whedon would be returning to write and direct the sequel to Marvel’s massive blockbuster. At the time, no release date had been set for the movie, but many assumed we would see it in the summer of 2015, ending Phase 2 of Marvel’s film series. Looks like those assumptions turned out to be correct, Marvel has officially announced today that the sequel will officially be landing in theaters May 1, 2015. But that’s not all we’ve learned from this announcement. It looks like the sequel to ‘The Avengers’ will also have a new title.
Take a look at the the official announcement for the sequels release date that Marvel sent out:
The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.
Now, this doesn’t mean that the film won’t be called ‘The Avengers’. I think this will go in a similar route of the most recent Marvel sequels, ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’ and ‘Thor: The Dark World’, that are adding subtitles to their titles instead of just adding numbers to them. In a way, I like it better, because it seems less generic than just adding a number, and gives you an idea of what’s to come in the film.
If you haven’t seen ‘The Avengers’ yet, you may want to avoid this next part, because it could be considered spoiler material. But with this new information, it makes me wonder if, with Marvel’s recent slant heading in a semi-cosmic direction with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, which is also part of the set up for ‘Avengers 2’, could the film be titled ‘The Avengers: The Infinity Gauntlet’? All signs point that the big bad in the sequel be Thanos, who we saw in the post credits scene of ‘Avengers’, and will be a big part of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, and this is the most obvious story line to go forward with, and one of the most famous. If it ends up being the case, I’m going to be very happy, and very excited. ‘The Infinity Gauntlet’ story line is one of my favorite story arcs in Marvel history, and could be a very epic and exciting one to watch play out on screen. It’s also one that will test ‘The Avengers’ and really push them in a way you’d never expect.
What do you think about the new release date and possibility of a new title? Is there a title you’d like to see the film have, or a certain story line you’d like to see play out? Let me know in the comments below, only here at Chip and Company!

I don’t think the plot will be going to out there. The Infinity Gauntlet is definitely an exciting angle for the series, so I’m really looking forward to seeing it (hopefully) play out. It’ll be something non comic fans will definitely embrace, and Thanos is an excellent villain.
And I couldn’t agree more about the titles. That’s definitely the way I like sequels, numbers seem so generic, doesn’t give the movie too much life I feel like. Thanks for reading the article! – Patrick
I would rather have subtitles than numbers. It worked for the James Bond franchise. The plot just can’t get too out there. It needs to stay available to non-fanboys also.
So excited!! My birthday is May 2nd
