Disney Looks Back at 70 Years of Patriotic Flyovers from Disneyland Opening Day to America 250

Disney is taking fans on a patriotic trip through history with a new video celebrating more than 70 years of military flyovers above its parks. Released as part of the ongoing America 250 celebration, the retrospective highlights the longstanding partnership between Disney Parks and the United States military, stretching all the way back to Disneyland’s opening day in 1955.

The video opens with the breathtaking U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds soaring over EPCOT in 2023 before rewinding to July 17, 1955, when Disneyland welcomed guests for the very first time. During the live opening day television broadcast, aircraft from California’s 146th Fighter Interceptor Wing flew over the park, kicking off a tradition that has continued through decades of milestone celebrations, military appreciation events, anniversaries, and patriotic holidays.

Over the years, Disney has welcomed countless military flyovers during special events, including Walt Disney World’s 20th anniversary rededication, National Veterans and Military Families Month celebrations, Navy Fleet Week, The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary, and commemorations recognizing more than a century of aerial refueling. The new video also features service members meeting Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their patriotic attire as part of the America 250 festivities at EPCOT.

The tradition continued this Independence Day as the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 920th Rescue Wing from Patrick Space Force Base performed a flyover of Magic Kingdom and EPCOT on July 4. The aerial salute was part of Walt Disney World’s Fourth of July festivities, joining favorites like Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT’s Heartbeat of Freedom fireworks finale, patriotic Spaceship Earth lighting, Voices of Liberty performances, and more.

From Disneyland’s opening day to today’s America 250 celebration, Disney’s flyover tradition has become a unique way to honor the nation’s service members while creating unforgettable moments above some of the world’s most iconic theme parks. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most magical views aren’t just on the ground, but soaring high overhead.
