Will “Snow White” Be the Fairest Live Action of Them All?

Disney’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “Snow White” is expected to make a splash at the box office, with projections placing its opening weekend earnings between $45 million and $55 million in North American theaters. Internationally, the film is expected to add another $50 million, pushing its global debut past the $100 million mark.

While these figures are certainly respectable, they fall short of the blockbuster openings enjoyed by some of Disney’s previous live-action remakes. Films like “The Little Mermaid,” “The Jungle Book,” “The Lion King,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast” all debuted with significantly higher numbers, some even crossing the billion-dollar threshold.

“Snow White” is instead tracking closer to 2019’s “Dumbo,” which opened with $45 million but ultimately underperformed, generating a disappointing $353 million worldwide against a $170 million budget. With “Snow White” carrying a hefty production cost of over $250 million (excluding marketing expenses), Disney is hoping for a longer, more sustained run in theaters, similar to last December’s “Mufasa.” That “Lion King” prequel started slow but ultimately soared to impressive global figures.

Starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, the film offers a modern take on the classic fairy tale, with Snow White teaming up with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom. However, the film has faced its share of headwinds.

Controversies surrounding changes to the story, including Zegler’s assertion that the film is “more feminist,” and calls for boycotts due to Zegler and Gadot’s differing stances on the Israel-Hamas war have generated significant online discussion. Disney has notably scaled back the film’s premieres, opting for smaller events in London and Hollywood, forgoing the traditional red carpet and press interviews. Cast members have reportedly expressed “disappointment” at these scaled down premieres.

Despite the controversies, “Snow White” benefits from the enduring popularity of the original animated film and a relatively quiet period at the box office. The film’s success will ultimately depend on its ability to resonate with audiences and maintain momentum in the weeks following its release.
