Disney Developing Live-Action Gaston Movie From Beauty and the Beast
Disney is heading back to the village where everyone’s favorite boastful brute once roamed, as a live-action Beauty and the Beast spinoff centered on Gaston is officially in development. According to reporting by Variety, the film will focus on the iconic antagonist made famous in the 1991 animated classic, with a brand-new take on the character rather than continuing directly from the 2017 live-action remake.

The project is being written by David Callaham, whose previous credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. At this stage, plot details are being kept under lock and key, and no director has been announced. Disney is also expected to cast a new actor as Gaston, as Luke Evans, who portrayed the character in the 2017 film, is not anticipated to return.
Gaston has long stood out as one of Disney’s most memorable villains, known for his over-the-top confidence, relentless pursuit of Belle, and that legendary egg-heavy diet that somehow made him “roughly the size of a barge.” While Beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle falling in love with the cursed Beast and breaking the spell on his enchanted household, this new film is expected to explore Gaston from a fresh angle, possibly diving deeper into his backstory or reimagining his role entirely.

The move fits neatly into Disney’s ongoing strategy of revisiting classic characters in new ways. While some recent remakes have struggled at the box office, films like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King each crossed the billion-dollar mark, and Cruella proved that villain-focused stories can resonate with audiences when done right. Disney is also developing live-action projects based on Tangled and Prince Charming, signaling that familiar fairy tales are far from done getting the spotlight.
