Liberty Belle Riverboat Removed and Crews Begin Work on Tom Sawyer Island for Magic Kingdom Expansion
Following the permanent closure of several classic Magic Kingdom attractions on Sunday, July 6, 2025, Frontierland is already undergoing a rapid transformation. Disney is wasting no time, with crews beginning active site preparation for the park’s massive upcoming expansion.

The area that once encompassed the Liberty Square Riverboat, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Frontierland Railroad Station is now completely closed off to guests. Early signs of demolition and preparation work are already visible, signaling the swift transition from operational attractions to an active construction zone.

Liberty Belle Moved Backstage, Dock Sealed
The iconic Liberty Belle Riverboat, which previously offered scenic tours around the Rivers of America, has been removed from guest view. The vessel has been moved backstage to the marina area. Correspondingly, the Liberty Square dock from which guests boarded the riverboat is now completely blocked by rolling planters. Both the entrance and exit ramps to the dock have been sealed off with construction walls, signifying its immediate decommission.

Tom Sawyer Island Inaccessible, Demolition Prep Begins
At the entrance to Tom Sawyer Island, guests will now encounter construction walls completely blocking access to and from the raft dock. All of the distinctive log rafts, previously used to ferry guests to the island, have been removed from service and relocated backstage, out of sight.
The island itself is now fully inaccessible to the public. Reports indicate that crews have already begun the process of removing set pieces and props from Tom Sawyer Island, a clear indication that demolition preparations are well underway for this corner of Magic Kingdom.

This swift action underscores Disney’s commitment to its previously announced plans for a new “Cars”-themed area, Piston Peak National Park, set to occupy a significant portion of what was formerly the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. The rapid transition signals the start of a major transformation for one of Magic Kingdom’s most historic lands.
