Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 app

I recently had the opportunity to try out Disney Publishing’s Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 app for iPad, and I’m really impressed with it!

Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 presents a whole new way to learn a foreign language with this read-along app based on the international teaching method Diglot Weave. My kids and I have started learning Chinese with this engaging, story-driven app that teaches you while you’re having fun.

With Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3, my kids are experiencing the excitement of Toy Story 3 with Buzz and Woody while gradually transforming it from English to a story they understand in Chinese and Pinyin, mixing the new with the known by playing with 5 progressive levels of the story:

Level 1. English only
Level 2. Beginning Chinese/Pinyin (25%)
Level 3. Intermediate (50% Chinese/Pinyin)
Level 4. Advanced (75% Chinese/Pinyin)
Level 5. 100% Chinese/Pinyin

I sat down with my 8-year-old daughter and played around with it quite a bit. She liked how it has different levels of learning. She said it helps to learn a little bit at a time so that when you get to the more difficult level, it’s easier to go on with the story. She likes how you can listen to the words being spoken and repeat them so you get the pronunciation right. She really liked recording herself saying the words and comparing it back to the computer, so she could tell when she got it just right. With Chinese, tonal inflections are very important. We found this app to be a very handy tool to learn a difficult language.

To be honest, as an adult, I have enjoyed the app too! Sure, it’s geared toward younger learners, but that actually made it less intimidating to me as a grownup. And as a homeschooling parent/teacher, Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 made it easy for me to stay a step ahead of my student. I definitely recommend it, and you can get it on sale right now in the iTunes store for only $1.99 (orig. $4.99) through September 12!
