Variety has reported that starting this morning the Disney/ABC television group began notifying affected employees that they were being laid off. The layoff plan had been announced 6 weeks ago as part of an effort to restructure and reallocate the resources at the Walt Disney Company’s non-sports broadcast and cable television arm.
It appears that the number of employees affected seem to be less than the originally projected 10% workforce cut. The majority of these cuts are part of the non-content related or operational sectors of all of ABC’s entertainment units. These units include ABC Studios, Disney Channel, DisneyXD, Disney Junior, and Freeform. These layoffs are a cost-cutting measure as Disney is moving to different forms of content distribution as cable-based subscribers decrease and digital/on-demand viewership increases.
Disney/ABC Television Group declined to comment when asked about this development.
