For those who frequent Disney’s Polynesian Resort not only for the food but for the atmosphere you might notice a change outside Kona Cafe. What once used to be Kona Island Coffee and Sushi is now just Kona Island Coffee Bar. Ah but for those who venture into Kona Cafe will see an added change as well, Kona Cafe now has a sushi bar!
Chip and Co fan Laurie is reporting the central area as you walk into Kona Cafe is now a sushi station with 2 chefs. Facing the chefs are the sushi on the right and on the left are the dessert displays.
The sushi bar outside of Kona Cafe is now just the Kona Island Coffee Bar. The display now lists coffees on the menu board on the wall.
At 5 pm you can get sushi from room service, at Kona Cafe, sitting at the coffee bar, and take out from the coffee bar. This move gives the sushi chefs their own large private work space near the kitchen to show off their talents . The chefs used to be crammed in an area that also served the sushi bar and take out orders. Laurie says her favorites are the gluten and soy free California Luau Roll and the vegetarian cucumber roll. The best part of the coffee bar is that you can order take out Kona Cafe food and the sushi to eat while watching Wishes. Several California Grill sushi chefs are working at Kona Cafe while their restaurant is being refurbished.

The to go section of the coffee bar offers for breakfast most of the Kona Cafe items like pancakes, French toast, Tonga Toast, omelets, and fruit. Available desserts include Kona Kone, Kona coffee panna cotta, banana chocolate creme brulee, ginger cake trifle, pineapple upside down cake, and chocolate fondue. I was told that the evening menu take out dinner menu at the coffee bar will be scaled down.
I eat at the Kona Cafe every trip it’s family tradition
Chip this new work space should make it easier on the sushi chefs and faster for orders to be processed. Thanks Vanessa for helping out Chip. All of us together have scooped the other sites on this awesome change. Vanessa you will have to try the creme brulee as I cannot eat it usually. When I was there the chefs just stood around as it was late at night. The old work area often saw hour plus waits for sushi.
You rawk! Thanks so much for the pics!
Hi Chip, I saw this last week….I also took a few photos .I can post those on your FB page, you can copy them to use here.Good News is you can still sit at the counter or by the windows to the monorail and order from both the Sushi menu and the Kona Cafe Menu….I often have done this as a single traveler, so I checked and yes those tables are still first come – No ADR. They now have a sign by the register that you can also order several items there to be boxed as “ToGo”.
I have not ever eaten at Kona…I have made recipes from there at home and they were amazing so I assume that it would be even better! Thanks for posting!
