Disneyland’s King Arthur Carrousel Closing for Refurbishment

Disneyland’s historic King Arthur Carrousel, an opening day treasure that has enchanted guests since 1955, is officially scheduled to close for refurbishment beginning July 6, 2026. This upcoming closure marks the beloved Fantasyland attraction’s first major downtime since its extensive, multi-month restoration project that began back in January 2020.

The historic King Arthur Carrousel is slated to officially pause its royal rotation and begin a scheduled refurbishment on July 6, 2026. At this time, Disney has not yet announced an official reopening date or shared specific details regarding the exact scope of the maintenance work. Because Disneyland takes meticulous care of its opening-day treasures, these routine tune-ups are typically used to refresh the intricate mechanics, touch up the vibrant paint, and ensure the horses keep safely galloping for generations to come.

While the carousel is famously themed after Disney’s 1963 animated classic The Sword in the Stone—complete with the iconic anvil and sword monument standing proudly out front for guests to test their strength—the ride’s history actually stretches back over a century.

The antique merry-go-round was originally manufactured by the William F. Mangels Company in 1922 for Sunnyside Beach Park in Toronto, Canada. Walt Disney later purchased the attraction and had it relocated to California in 1954, where it was extensively reimagined, expanded to feature all-galloping white horses, and prepared to welcome guests for Disneyland’s historic opening day on July 17, 1955.
