Great news, true believers! Disney announced today during their Investors Conference Call that Joss Whedon has officially signed on to write and direct the sequel to his highly acclaimed and commercially successful film, ‘The Avengers’. Little is known about the project at this time, but I’m assuming it’ll be coming at the tail end of Marvel Studio’s Phase 2 plan that they’re putting together right now. That means we have ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, and ‘Ant-Man’ to look forward to before we see the heroes reunited in ‘The Avengers 2’. Whedon’s deal will run through 2015, and features more than just his sequel. Hit the jump for Marvel.
Marvel studios officially announced the news:
“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
So it looks as if Whedon won’t just be doing the ‘The Avengers 2’, but a new TV show as well. There is a good chance this is the same show that we reported on last week that was being developed. This is insanely great news for not just fans, but Marvel as well. The other part that is great about all this is that Whedon will be involved creatively through all the new new movies under the Marvel banner. Having him on board as a creative consultant will really help bolster the next slate of films, and he’ll make sure that everything that happens will stay within the confines of what he’ll need for ‘Avengers 2’, leaving no continuity issues between films. No one is better for this job than Joss, and I for one am VERY happy that he’s back. I’m giddy for this news, how about you? Are you glad to see Whedon brought back on board for ‘The Avengers 2’? Couldn’t agree more. I’m definitely very excited to see him coming back for the sequel, and it’s even better news to see that he’ll be involved in all the films and a new TV show for them as well. It’s really great to see Whedon finally getting the recognition he deserves. 🙂 Thanks for reading! – Patrick
I’m so excited to hear this! I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan, I loved Firefly. I think he added a great dimension to The Avengers and I can’t wait to see what he does next!
