Jon Favreau Wants To Make A New ‘Star Wars Holiday Special‘. While on the red carpet for the Saturn Awards over the weekend, Executive Producer, Jon Favreau talked with ET about his new show on Disney+, The Mandalorian, and other opportunities with Disney+, including the possibility for another infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.
“That’s my generation. I love the ‘Holiday Special.’ I mean, certain sequences more than others. But I love the introduction of Boba Fett and that rifle that he had. That animated piece still holds up. It’s pretty cool. And I still draw inspiration from that. I would love to, maybe someday on Disney+, we’ll do a Holiday Special too,” said Favreau to ET.
“I would love to do a Holiday Special,” Favreau said turning his attention to the camera to address fans directly: “If you want to see a Holiday Special, let Disney+ know.”
For those who never got to witness the marvelous disaster that is the Star Wars Holiday Special and have no idea what we are talking about, here is a brief synopsis of the special:
“Chewbacca and Han Solo attempt to visit the Wookiee home world to celebrate “Life Day”. They are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire, who are searching for members of the Rebel Alliance on the planet. The special introduces three members of Chewbacca’s family: his father Itchy, his wife Malla, and his son Lumpy. The program also features the rest of the main Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader and Princess Leia, all portrayed by the original cast. The program includes footage from the 1977 film, and a cartoon produced by Toronto-based Nelvana featuring the bounty hunter Boba Fett. A few scenes take place in space and in spacecraft including the Millennium Falcon and a Star Destroyer. The variety show segments and cartoon also take place in a few other locales, such as the Mos Eisley cantina seen in the original film, and a newly introduced red ocean planet known as Panna.”
The special was not received well by audiences and was never again released by Lucasfilm after it premiered. The only record of the Star Wars Holiday Special has come from home recordings of the special that have since been distributed online.
Though Lucasfilm would love nothing more that audiences to forget the Star Wars Holiday Special, it appears there is an certain low-key following that wishes to see the original re-released, or possibly an all new Star Wars Holiday Special, possibly with the newer characters and the veteran actors.
What are your thoughts on the Star Wars Holiday Special? Should it stay out of the spotlight? Do you think Disney and Lucasfilm should develop an all new Holiday Special for Disney+ or television? Should Jon Favreau head the project? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
