Jon Favreau Credits Donald Glover with the Idea to Keep “Baby Yoda” a Secret. During their work together on the live-action of The Lion King, Donald Glover and Jon Favreau had some time to discuss Favreau’s other project, “The Mandalorian.” Favreau always intended to keep the project quiet, but during their various conversations Favreau gives Glover the credit for thinking of the idea to keep “The Child”, aka “Baby Yoda,” a complete secret up until the reveal during the shows premiere on Disney+.
“We were talking about music and pop culture, and he was saying that what people really like now is to be surprised, because it doesn’t happen that much,” Favreau said. “When Beyoncé did an album, she would just put it online and everybody would react to it. Just putting it out there spurred a conversation that would become more viral and bring more genuine attention than any marketing.”
“The way the cat usually gets out of the bag with that stuff is merchandising and toy catalogs and things like that,” Favreau told Entertainment Tonight.
In another interview with ET Jon Favreau thanked Disney for agreeing to keep “The Child” a secret and that their decision to hold off on creating merchandise was key to surprising fans.
Do you agree keeping “Baby Yoda” secret was a good idea? Were you surprised by the reveal at the end of Episode 1? Have you been enjoying The Mandalorian on Disney+? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for all things Star Wars!
