Johnny Depp Surprises Comic-Con Fans as Ebenezer Scrooge

Johnny Depp brought a blast of Christmas chill to San Diego Comic-Con when he appeared fully transformed into Ebenezer Scrooge to promote the upcoming film Ebenezer. The surprise unfolded inside a temporary 1880s British Christmas Village in the Gaslamp district, where Victorian carolers set the scene before Depp emerged from a counting house window with a suitably grumpy glare.

Staying in character, Depp teased the crowd about having too much free time before dismissing the gathering with a classic “Humbug!” The appearance marked an unexpected return to Comic-Con for Depp, who last attended the event in 2018 while promoting Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Depp later appeared in Hall H during a Directors on Directing panel to introduce the first trailer for Ebenezer. His declaration that it was “good to be back” carried an extra bit of weight, marking both Scrooge’s journey through time and Depp’s return to a major Hollywood production after spending recent years working largely in independent and international films.

Ebenezer is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 18 and also stars Sam Claflin, Ian McKellen, Daisy Ridley, and Rupert Grint.
