Yesterday we ran a story that Jason Segel wouldn’t be returning to write the sequel to ‘The Muppets’. At the time, it was unclear if that meant Segel would be coming back to star in the film or not. Unfortunately, it looks like the man who brought the Muppets back to the big screen won’t be returning in any capacity. Hit the jump for more.
Collider was the first to break the news. In an interview with Segel for his new film ‘Jeff Who Lives at Home’, he was asked about the rumors that he wouldn’t be returning to write the sequel. Segel confirmed he wouldn’t be writing the sequel, and then went on to confirm he wouldn’t be starring in it either.
“It’s true but it’s totally amicable. My goal was to bring The Muppets back and I did that leaving them in very good hands, my writing partner and James Bobin the director. I did what I set out to do, and now I wanna pursue more human-related projects (laughs).
Thankfully though, Segel hasn’t closed the door to returning in the future.
“All I wanted to do was to set the stage for them to do whatever they wanted. I’m sure I’ll return in some capacity here and there, but that was half a decade of my life. Five years of hard work. I’m ready for a little puppet break.””
So it looks like those that were hoping we’d see Walter’s older brother Gary come back in the sequel will be sadly disappointed. I thought Segel brought a lot of humor and heart to the movie, and I’m definitely sad to see he won’t be returning. But I’m very thankful he brought the characters back to the big screen, and I understand him possibly wanting the break. I do hope we see Segel return as Gary eventually, but for now it looks like it’ll be Kermit, Walter, Miss Piggy, and all the rest on their own new adventure.
‘The Muppets’ sequel is currently being developed by director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller. There is no release date for the next film at this time.
