Prince Harry meets Disney Royalty when the Invictus Games roll into Orlando May 8-12 for what promises to be a spectacular sporting event honoring ill, wounded and injured service men and women. Over 500 competitors, both veterans and active military, from across 15 nations are expected to take part in one of 10 sporting events.
Kicking off the week-long event will be a star-studded, jam-pack opening ceremony held on May 8th at 6pm with performances by British songstress Laura Wright and music and military veteran James Blunt. They will share the spotlight with a cavalcade of musical appearances from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, U.S Air Force, U.S. Army Band, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Team and U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The ceremony will also feature poignant accounts from injured military servicemen MSgt Israel Del Toro Jr, LCpl John-James Chalmers and Louis Nethercott.
Held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort, the event will pay tribute to the amazing contributions of men and women in uniform. “The Opening Ceremony of the Invictus Games Orlando 2016 will be a spectacular event that reflects the awe-inspiring spirit and courage of the competitors, family friends and care givers”, said Sara Donaldson, one of the events Executive Producers. “With breath-taking military performances, stories of courage and musical acts that are unmatched, fans won’t want to miss the epic display that will be put on at the Opening Ceremony and should buy their tickets now before they sell out.”
The Invictus Games are the brain child of Prince Harry who after attending a similar event stateside in 2013 was moved by the powerful role competitive sports could play in improving the well-being of injured military personnel. The first Invictus Games was held in London in 2014.
