Indiana Jones Box Office Numbers Falls Flat for Opening Weekend
Despite hitting the low end of box office projections at about 60 million for it’s opening, studio executives and insiders surely expected a larger turnout for Indiana Jones’s last adventure. Indiana Jones was a huge part of the Disney acquisition, so these box office numbers have to be disappointing given the marketing and weight Lucasfilm put behind Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. For perspective, the much maligned Solo: A Star Wars Story opened higher than Dial, having earned 84 million in the same window.

Estimates have the budget of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny somewhere around 300 million to produce. Some of those costs are inflated due to COVID production increases, Harrison Ford’s compensation along with hefty paychecks to James Mangold. Disney hasn’t released a final cost of the film, but unless Indiana Jones can pick up momentum, this could result in a massive loss for Lucasfilm and Disney.
The film received a lackluster reception at Cannes film festival several weeks ago, but Disney didn’t stop pushing the film, with heavy marketing in the lead up to theatrical release. I’m sure there will be plenty of time to analyze the mistakes made here, but I cannot help but speculate that the film just did not appeal to anyone under 35 years old. From the looks of our theater, the demographic skewed much older than the normal Disney / Lucasfilm crowd. Does Indiana Jones fail to resonate with younger audiences? The coming weeks will certainly answer that question.
