Imagineer George McGinnis passes away at 87

George McGinnis, the last Disney Imagineer that Walt Disney hired has just passed at the age of 87.

George was the show designer on Space Mountain at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. He also worked on designs like the People Mover, the upgrades to the monorails, the Jeeps for Indiana Jones, and was also the lead designer for Horizons in Epcot.

“George was a disciplined “pro” – a designer who truly paid attention to every detail,” said Marty Sklar, the former vice chairman of Walt Disney Imagineering in a statement.

“‘He loved designing for Disney and put his heart and soul into every project. From Space Mountain to Horizons, monorails to countless other ride vehicles, his imprint on Disney Parks was unique and timeless,’ said Tom Fitzgerald, a current Imagineer who served as a writer on the Horizons Pavilion.”

He wrote a book about his experiences back in 2016 called “From Horizons to Space Mountain: The Life of a Disney ImagineerImagineer George McGinnis passes away at 87.”

George is survived by his wife and family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
