David Henry Hwang, the Tony-winning M. Butterfly playwright has just been assigned to write Hunchback, the live-action musical from the classic 1996 film. The live-action will be an adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. The music will be written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. Along with Mandeville, Josh Gad is producing the new live-action musical. It is rumored that Josh Gad could play the lead role, but at this point, there is no solid casting.
Hwang is well known for many other works. This includes Chilglish, Yellow Face, Kung Fu, Golden Child and The Dance and the Railroad. His Broadway musicals include Aida, a collaboration with Elton John & Tim Rice, Flower Drum Song, and Disney’s animated Tarzan. “He is American’s most produced living opera librettist as well.”–Mike Flemming Jr, Deadline.com
Further recognition goes to Schwartz and Menken. Schwartz is a three-time Oscar winner for Wicked, Godspell, and Pippin. Menken is an eight-time Oscar winner including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the original 1996 animated Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The new film will puzzle pieces of the 1996 animated film and the novel by Hugo. However, it will not include the stage production by Schwartz and Menken. David Hoberman has desired for a live-action Hunchback for well over 30 years, back when he was Disney film president. He helps run Mandeville with Todd Lieberman. The early attempt to making this a reality turned into the animated film and another became a small TV series on ABC. Nevertheless, the time has come for Hunchback to finally become a live-action reality! There has not been an official release date for the film by Disney yet.
