Hunchback of Notre Dame Live-Action Reportedly Canceled

There’s heavy talk of a live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame in production since 2019. The collaboration was based entirely on speculation from TikTok and has been gathering momentum over the past two years. Disney never formally announced the project, and the only concrete update came from Alan Menken last May.

Referring to the dicey material in the animated film’s score Menken explained, “It’s (Hunchback’s) a tough one, because the Hunchback movie, Hunchback story involves a lot of real, real issues that are important issues and should be explored to be discussed. And there has to be an agreement about how we deal with those issues. You know, do we do a Hunchback without ‘Hellfire?’ I don’t think so … So it sits in this limbo right now.”

Rumor and unsubstantiated reports have the project shelved. Bob Iger was quite candid about the future of Disney media in an interview with CNBC’s David Faber. Iger shared Disney’s future strategy by stating, “we have to look really hard at how much we’ve made and what’s really worked. And now that we are even more focused on delivering profitability, we have to be I think more discerning in terms of basically what we say yes to…”

Therefore it’s highly likely that Hunchback may have not made it out of pre-production. So many films fall by the wayside before one frame of film is even captured, so rumor has it that Hunchback (at least for now) has suffered an ignominious defeat. Stay tuned for updates on this project and more Disney films and shows.

  1. I always wondered who at Disney decided the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame was appropriate for children. Even as redirected as it is from the original (horrific) story, the Hellfire song and the punishments are severe… All these live action films are getting tiresome, the only one that was decent was the Little Mermaid. Halle was terrific with such a sweet singing voice, very much like her predecessor Jodi Benson. (I know The Little Mermaid by heart. It is my favorite Disney movie. I was a nanny for 20+ years and saw the movie a hundred times or more. I know all the lines and while this is sad, it is true!) The script changes were interesting, making sense of things that were weird in the original like Sebastian telling Eric what Ariel’s name is, instead we have Ariel teaching him her name after star gazing and Eric naming Aries. We learn more about Eric and Ariel as they explore their shared interests………….. (I know we can’t talk about Bruno, but I’m also not going to talk about that train wreck of a song that “Scuttle” and Sebastian did.) Other live movies were ok, but just a retelling of what we already knew. Little Mermaid made their world real, not just Triton’s palace, but Ursula’s den and Eric’s castle!
