High School Marching Band Set to Perform at Disney World Cancels After Being Asked to Cover Native American Logo
A Venice High School Marching Band has canceled their performance at Walt Disney World after being asked to cover the school logo which depicts a Native American.
In a letter on Thursday to parents and students at Venice High School in Venice Florida, Principal Zoli Kerestely says the band’s planned trip to Disney World on Nov. 12th will still happen but the band won’t be marching in the morning parade at the Magic Kingdom.
“Unfortunately, after Disney approved our school to attend, then they notified us of a change in their own policies,” he writes. “Disney has stated that they are not allowing any depiction of Native Americans to be portrayed during events.”

Principal Kerestely noted in his letter that he asked Disney twice to reconsider their demand to cover their school logo.
“Our band deserves to be honored and celebrated without having to change our name or cover our identity,” Kerestely wrote. “When I see them perform, I am filled with pride and admiration for the work each student, Mr. Wing, and parents put into the program.”
At this time the band is looking for an alternate performance venue for the students.
Sarasota School Board Chair Jane Goodwin said the school’s decision to pull out of the performance was “disappointing,” and said there should be more discussions about the future of Venice High’s mascot.
Venice High School has been the Indians for decades now and there have been requests from Native American activists to change the logo. While nothing was done according to the Herald-Tribune there would be more discussions about the mascot now.
