Height Requirement Lowered on Big Thunder Mountain
Not only is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad set to reopen at Magic Kingdom on May 3, but it’s bringing even more magic to the little ones. Disney has officially lowered the height requirement, meaning more ‘young cowpokes’ than ever can finally experience the wildest ride in the wilderness.

Prior to its lengthy refurbishment in January 2025—which introduced fresh track and updated ride vehicles—Big Thunder Mountain Railroad maintained a 40-inch height minimum. However, the Disney Parks Blog has officially confirmed a change: following structural enhancements and a thorough safety evaluation, the attraction will debut a new, more accessible height requirement of 38 inches.

The new Rainbow Caverns sequence takes guests on a sensory journey from beauty to bravado. What starts as a breathtaking scene of phosphorescent pools and crystalline formations quickly takes a turn for the ‘wildest’ when the rumbling thunder transforms the cavern into a menacing, high-tension escape.
It’s not just a smoother ride—it’s a prettier one, too. Disney has polished up the Audio-Animatronics, added a hoard of new gold props, and fixed ‘inoperable’ effects that have been dark for years. With the signature steam effect now testing at the entrance and a brand-new sign in place, the countdown to the May 3 reopening is officially on.
