Hayden Christensen Could be Returning to Play Anakin in Upcoming Star Wars ‘Kenobi’ Series. According to a source close to LRMOnline, Disney has been in touch with actor Hayden Christensen about the possibility of reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker for the currently untitled Kenobi series coming soon to Disney+.
The original concept of the series was originally designed to premiere as A Star Wars Story feature length film, but with the release of Disney+ and the raging success of The Mandalorian, it makes sense the studios decided to retool the film into a series, which will allow us to dive deeper into the story. Other concerns for the rewrite is that the original concept was too similarly structured to The Mandalorian, with Obi-Wan feeling the need to be protective of one young Luke Skywalker.
Kathleen Kennedy had gone over the scripts for the untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series and was not pleased with the trajectory of the storyline and has since ordered a rewrite for the scripts which has now caused an “indeterminable” delay in production. Given the idea that the show too closely paralleled The Mandalorian, it makes sense that rewrites are in the works. It seems the series will re-shift the focus of the story to not just Obi-Wan’s sense of duty and responsibility for Luke, but may give insight to how Obi-Wan becomes known as Ben Kenobi within the franchise. This could also be why Hayden Christensen may appear in the series, though likely in flashback/memory/dream sequences since the story is set to take place after the events of Revenge of the Sith and Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side.
Disney, Lucasfilm, and Christensen have yet to confirm or deny these rumors, but likely an announcement would be made during a Star Wars celebration sometime this year. Also expected to be confirmed by the studios is news of Rosario Dawson’s appearance as Ahsoka Tano in season 2 of The Mandalorian.
The currently untitled Kenobi series is scheduled to begin filming in early 2021, with expected premiere on Disney+ in 2022. Deborah Chow has been chosen as show runner for the series, with Ewan McGregor set to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
