Haunted Mansion Disappoints at Box Office with $24 Million Opening Weekend
Barbie continued to dominate the box office, earning another 93 million in its second week. The tally is a drop of 43% after opening to 162 million. If you add the foreign numbers, Barbie has earned a dreamy 774 million dollars worldwide. These are historic numbers for Warner Brothers, and the financials could only continue to grow in the coming weeks. The Greta Gerwig directed film cost 145 million to produce.
Oppenheimer also impressed in its second week, easily capturing second place at theaters. Oppenheimer amassed an additional 46 million, a drop of 44% from last weekend. This is the biggest second weekend for an R rated film since Deadpool 2. Christopher Nolan’s 3hr Oppenheimer has now exploded to 400 million worldwide.

Disney Haunted Mansion finished a distant third at the box office with 24.2 million. The live-action family pic experience one of the worst starts for a film reimagining based off a theme park ride. This was a surprise to very few as the film was tracking for 30 million heading into the weekend, but it didn’t even hit those numbers.
Haunted Mansion was troubled by mediocre reviews, but ultimately the film failed to connect with the family marketplace. Given it’s PG-13 rating many families may have hesitated, worrying the film was too intense for younger audiences.

Not all is lost for Haunted Mansion as Disney can hope for positive word of mouth going into its second weekend. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is holding strong at 86%, and is a silver lining for the struggling film.
Mansion will have additional competition in the family market when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem hits theaters on August 2nd. Mansion cost an estimated 150 million before marketing, so it still has a long way to go. Disney can hold out hope that Haunted Mansion emulates the similar soft open of Pixar’s Elemental which climbed steadily after a disappointing first week in theaters.
The low-budget “Sound of Freedom” added $13.6 million from 3,411 theaters in its fifth weekend of release. Mission Impossible added 10.7 million in its third week. Internationally, Mission Impossible has generated $309.4 million for a global total of $448 million.
