“Goonies Never Say Die”: A Beloved ’80s Classic Edges Closer to a Sequel

If, like us, you’ve ever shouted “Hey, you guys!” at the top of your lungs, your moment of celebration may be here at last. According to reporting by Deadline, the long-rumored sequel to “The Goonies” finally seems to be gaining steam via the news that Potsy Ponciroli, the breakout writer-director of the Western “Old Henry,” has come aboard to pen the script for Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

For nearly 40 years, “The Goonies” has remained a cornerstone of ’80s pop culture. Directed by the late Richard Donner, produced by Steven Spielberg, and written by Chris Columbus, the 1985 adventure-comedy followed a tight-knit group of misfit friends — Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, and company — determined to save their homes from foreclosure. Their treasure hunt spanned underground caves, booby traps galore, and one villainous Fratelli family, all culminating in the discovery of a pirate ship laden with riches.

This childhood classic starred future heavy-hitters like Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan (now an Oscar winner for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”). The film’s successful blend of humor, heart, and adventure helped cement it as a box-office hit and a cult favorite, leading to its selection for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2017. Despite decades of rumors about a sequel, the stars never quite aligned — and, in fact, some of the original cast seemed to doubt it would ever happen as recently as last year.

The Spark Behind the Scenes

Now, however, momentum is on the rise. With Ponciroli attached as the scriptwriter, there’s reason to believe this long-gestating project may finally reach the big screen. Ponciroli is quickly becoming a go-to filmmaker in Hollywood: after earning critical acclaim for “Old Henry” at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, he lined up a slew of projects, including “The Rescue” with Brandon Sklenar, and “Motor City,” starring Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, and Ben Foster.

Among his upcoming efforts is “Greedy People,” a crime comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and Himesh Patel, plus a variety of other films and shows in different stages of production. With that impressive track record, it’s no wonder Warner Bros. is looking to Ponciroli to take on the daunting task of reimagining “The Goonies” in a new era.

Who’s Holding the Map?

While Ponciroli is busy charting the sequel’s course, other key pieces are slowly falling into place behind the scenes. Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario will produce through Amblin Entertainment, with Chris Columbus (who wrote the original film’s screenplay) also involved, and Lauren Shuler Donner executive producing. A director hasn’t been announced yet, and no plot details have been released — so we can only dream about what form a new “Goonies” adventure might take.

The timing seems almost poetic. Just a couple of weeks ago, members of the beloved cast, including Ke Huy Quan, reunited at the TCL Chinese Theatres to celebrate Quan’s hand and foot imprint ceremony. Seeing them together again sent nostalgia soaring through fans worldwide and certainly stoked the sequel flames.

What sort of treasure hunt could bring the Goonies back together after all these years? Could it be a fresh journey for a new generation, guided by the original gang? Or perhaps an intergenerational romp that sees old and new “Goonies” teaming up in pursuit of yet another hidden trove? With Spielberg and Columbus involved, you can bet the story will stay faithful to the spirit of the original — while introducing a new audience to the plucky kids (and adults) who never say die.

Regardless of how it unfolds, the simple fact that progress is happening is enough to light up the hearts of fans worldwide. After decades of false starts, rumors, and cautious optimism, “The Goonies” may soon be charting an exciting course toward its long-awaited sequel.

Stay Tuned

So, Goonies fans, keep your treasure maps at the ready and continue practicing your Truffle Shuffles — it appears the dream of a sequel lives on. Though details are scarce, one thing’s for sure: the spirit of adventure is alive and well, and we’re ready to set sail for one more wild ride with Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, and hopefully the rest of the gang.

It’s been nearly four decades, but in the words of that timeless motto: Goonies never say die. And at long last, their big-screen return might be closer than ever.
