Based on the novel by Richard C. Morais, The Hundred Foot Journey is the story of the Kadam Family.
The movie starts with the family living in Mumbai, India and working at their restaurant. A fire leads to tragedy and causes the family to relocate to Europe first in London and later to France. During a minor car accident while traveling through France, the family meet the beautiful Marguarite, a sous chef at the famous Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin-starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren). While waiting for repairs on the family car, Papa Kadam, finds the perfect location to open Maison Mumbai, the new family restaurant in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble Val, in the south of France. Unfortunately, it is also 100 feet across the road from the famous Le Saule Pleureur, the French restaurant belonging to Madame Mallory. Madame Mallory takes pride in running the beautiful and classy restaurant which caters to the high society and includes only the best cuisine and top kitchen staff.
Maison Mumbai, is a family owned and run restaurant, where every member of the family pitches in to prep, cook and run the establishment under the direction of Papa. Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) as the head cook for the Maison Mumbai is a culinary genius who was trained by his mother and has the ability to create magic through his dishes. His love of food and his expertise, lead to the culinary creations of Indian and French dining combinations that will have the audience drooling over each plate.
The clash between Papa Kadam and Madame Mallory, starts out slow but takes flight and turns into a full out war to see who can out do whom in the battle to win the customers and disrupt one another’s businesses. Until Madame Mallory samples Hassan’s dishes and realizes his potential. Madame Mallory and Hassan develop a friendship and she offers Hassan the opportunity to work and tune his skills at her establishment. This results in positive reviews and an offer to work in Paris for Hassan. Once in Paris, Hassan becomes successful and well known, but the love of family and his blossoming feelings towards Marguarite, result in his return home.
