Animal kingdom food allergy kiosk

On August 4, 2013 a new food allergy information kiosk opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. This kiosk, located on Discovery Island, can be found near the It’s Tough to be a Bug. Called the “Garden Kiosk” guests will quickly recognize special diets snacks on display as well as note the “Allergy Dining Tips” sign. This kiosk is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Not only can guests pick up snacks but they can also chat with cast members about their dietary needs, looking at ingredients binders to help them make more informed dining decisions.

As a guest with a special diet myself (I’m gluten free & dairy free), I was very thrilled to be there opening day to check it all out. For a detailed review, you can visit my site for in-depth specifics for those guests who have dietary needs. One of the great things about this kiosk is that it is a one-stop-shop. It’s great for guests who are specifically looking for quick service and snack options in the park.

Another great thing about this kiosk is that many of the snack options are included on the Disney Dining Plan. That’s a real win. And if you’re looking for gluten free beer, the kiosk can also accommodate your beverage needs, carrying Omission Gluten Free Beer.  The kiosk also carries a variety of Babycakes NYC freshly baked goods including mini cupcakes, cookies, and blondie brownies. Pre-packaged items include cookies from Enjoy Life Foods, hummus and vegetables, Lundberg Rice Chips, and Rocky Mountain Caramel Corn. Many of these products do cover a variety of special dietary needs including gluten free and dairy free. Just ask a cast member for assistance, and they will be able to help you navigate the ingredients.

In addition to centrally located allergy friendly snacks, guests can also chat with cast members about dietary needs. They can pick up a grab and go “Allergy-Friendly Dining Tips” sheets which covers the three quick service locations: Pizzafari, Flame Tree Barbecue, and Restaurantosaurus. Each lists those items which can be made gluten free, as well as notes what allergens a dish is safe for.

The best part about this kiosk is the ability to look at all the ingredients in items served at both quick service and table service locations. The binder is organized by restaurant or snack kiosk and can be easily navigated. It contains pictures of each product and includes an ingredients list, as well as allergens notification. This is terrific for guests with a special diet, as they can easily see which items are safe or not, as well as ask questions.

Cast members at this kiosk are put through rigorous food allergy training and are very knowledgeable. If they don’t know the answer to your special diets questions, they can definitely make sure they find out the answer for you. Of course, when you head to your specific location, you’ll still want to speak with a manager or chef to let them know of your dietary needs. The benefit of this new kiosk is that you’ll know ahead of time what you can and cannot have and can expedite your dining experience (particularly at quick service locations which can be really slow).

During my visit, I found the kiosk to be very helpful and certainly a great addition to the theme park. I’m looking forward to visiting again, grabbing snacks and finding out safe choices for me to eat while I visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

  1. Love how considerate this is for all the different guests that come to the Disney parks. Wonderful idea!

  2. I think this is a great idea! I only wish they included information on MSG (monosodium glutamate). My husband has a sensitivity to MSG (he gets migraine headaches that last for more than a day) and we have to be very careful when eating out. We always end up talking to the manager or the head chef to determine what he can and can’t eat any time we try someplace new. If it weren’t such a hassle to figure out what he can safely eat at the parks we would certainly spend more money there.
